Surviving a Three-Week Arch Linux Nightmare: The Real Culprit Was RAM

For over three weeks, I found myself deep in a spiral of debugging what seemed like a catastrophic failure of my Arch Linux system. What began as a simple boot issue escalated into suspected disk failure, GPU problems, file corruption, and mysterious kernel panics.

Turns out, the fix was as simple as re-seating my RAM. Seriously. Here's how it all unfolded.


🧨 The Symptoms

  • Arch Linux wouldn’t boot
  • When it did, it froze on login or soon after reaching the desktop
  • Wayland refused to start properly
  • Plasma on X11 barely worked
  • Filesystem corruption reports from Btrfs
  • Systemd errors, GPU rendering failures, and freezes
  • Even Ubuntu Live USB would freeze or crash with kernel panics

At this point, I was suspecting everything:

  • Faulty SSD?
  • Bad kernel version?
  • GPU driver incompatibilities?
  • Broken Wayland session?

I wasn’t about to reinstall everything. So I tried it all:

  • Verified boot parameters (nvidia-drm.modeset=1, etc.)
  • Rebuilt initramfs with mkinitcpio
  • Tried btrfs check, btrfs restore, and even regex filters to rescue files
  • Booted multiple live ISOs (RescueZilla, Ubuntu 24.04, etc.)
  • Pulled disk images using dd (which also froze)
  • Removed NVIDIA drivers, tried using integrated graphics
  • Inspected logs, dmesg, journalctl, and hardware info

Nothing helped. The problems were wildly inconsistent. One boot would work, the next would freeze instantly. Every symptom pointed to different causes — GPU, filesystem, kernel, SSD.


đź’ˇ The Breakthrough: MemTest

Eventually, I ran a MemTest86+ boot ISO — and the truth came out:

Massive memory errors detected in the first few minutes.

But wait — each stick of RAM tested fine individually. It wasn’t until I reseated both sticks in their slots (A2/B2 on my ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F motherboard) that everything started working.

I just pulled out the RAM modules, cleaned the contacts, and reinserted them properly.

That’s it.

No more boot failures. No more system freezes. Wayland + NVIDIA now works flawlessly. Zero Btrfs corruption after rechecking.

  • Btrfs will scream about corruption caused by anything — including faulty RAM

This was one of the most complex and misleading system failures I’ve ever faced. The actual cause? Slightly loose RAM modules. A tiny contact issue that cascaded into full-blown system chaos.
